Farmers look up to avoid shocks

Western power are urging farmers to “look up” and be more aware of overhead power lines when operating machinery in fields.
A number of incidents have occured where farm equipment has come into contact with the high voltage lines, which could cause fatal injuries and result in power outages for thousands of people.
The advice is to be aware of surroundings and erect “reminders” where possible. If machinery does make contact with the grid, the operator should drive clear where possible but remain INSIDE the cab and its “Faraday Cage” protection.
105 is the national electricity emergency number and this should be called if contact is made with a power line. The driver should only exit the cab in an emergency, staying well clear of any power lines, even if they appear to be dead.
